How long should a children’s book title be?

There’s no strict rule, but shorter is usually better. Four to six words is easy to remember and repeat. Longer titles can work if they sound good, especially if it’s a name plus an adventure.

When should you come up with your children’s book title?

Ideally, after the story is finished. Use a working title until then. The real title often comes from the story itself—a repeated phrase or a key moment.

Does the main character’s name need to be in the title?

It doesn’t have to be, but it often works well. Kids recognize the hero right away and can ask for the book by name. Names with matching starting sounds, like Danny the Dog, are extra catchy.

How do I know if my title works?

Say it out loud ten times, have a child repeat it, and ask what they think the book is about. If they get close and can say the title easily, you’re on the right track.
